Intelligent Logistics

Online shopping has spoiled consumers: instead of waiting weeks for purchases to arrive, today an order can be delivered the next day. Modern warehousing and logistics mean adapting to these changes with technology solutions.

Processing inventory, customer, and logistical data requires regular high-frequency data backups as well as fast and secure access that is only possible through edge computing on-site. Individual edge data centers in branch offices are connected to core data centers in headquarters by spine data centers in regional warehouses. This data center topology allows for the exact adaptation to the requirements of the Retailer, taking into account the geographical conditions of the respective local sites and branches.

Customer-oriented delivery

Convenience and speed in the so-called “last mile” is also increasing. Real-time tracking enables pinpointing the exact location of the order, as well as its condition; for example, for products requiring temperature control such as groceries or medication.

Distance-based pricing models, or predictive delivery, whereby the customer decides when they want to receive their order, require accessing current traffic data to react efficiently and keep customers happy.

Intelligent logistics at the Global Distribution Center in Haiger

Rittal also achieves an increase in delivery quality of over 50% with modern warehousing and logistics. In the new Global Distribution Center (GDC) in Haiger, which has an area of more than 4,000 square metres and is up to 32 metres high, Rittal products are transported fully automatically to their place and then picked up again at 14 kilometres per hour – as fast as a forklift truck. A high-performance computer controls the incoming orders around the clock, stores details of incoming and outgoing products, and works out which pallet is to be loaded onto which truck. Up to 80 trucks a day filled with large and small enclosures, cooling units and accessories leave the GDC every day to be sent to customers worldwide.
